Maine is home to more than 2,000 salaried pharmacy technicians. This means, less than one percent of the nation’s 334,400 salaried technicians live in The Pine Tree State. Although Maine has one of the smallest populations of pharmacy technicians, it’s still large relative to Maine’s small resident population. Aspiring pharmacy technicians choose Maine for:

Maine pharmacy technician training programs

The Maine Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation requires registration for all pharmacy technicians. In addition, all technicians new to the field (never been licensed) must complete a training program managed by his or her potential employer (this applies to pharmacies), The National Pharmacy Technician Training Program, or an accredited college. These are the minimum requirements set forth by the Office—not by employers.

Requirements to become a pharmacy technician in Maine

As of June 1st, 2012, the state of Maine houses roughly 265 hospital and retail pharmacies.  Altogether, they employ more than two thousand full time pharmacy technicians.  Of these, only about forty percent hold up-to-date licenses from Maine's Pharmacy Board.  Part of the reason for this is that many technicians are trainees undergoing the licensing process.  Others are awaiting licensing renewal.  Whatever the reason, it seems clear that pharmacists overwhelmingly prefer licensed pharmacy technicians.  However, licensing laws and regulations regarding pharmacy technicians will vary from
